Costa Rica is one of the most popular Central American destinations for newlyweds. It’s not hard to see why. With its world-famous beaches and rainforests, it’s the perfect spot for couples looking to relax or explore. In fact, Costa Rica has been ranked in the world’s top 10 honeymoon destinations by Brides Magazine, the Signature Travel Network, Ask Men and Elle. Here are some of the best spots in the country for honeymooners:

Arenal
Many couples begin their Costa Rican honeymoon in the Arenal Volcano area. Not far from Arenal is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, one of the most outstanding wildlife refuges in the country, harboring hundreds of different species of mammals, birds and insects. You can go on a jungle hike or get a birds-eye view of the canopy on a zip-line tour. If five-star accommodation and pampering are your thing, there are plenty of hotels with ‘Luxury Honeymoon Packages’.

Guanacaste region
On the Pacific coast, the Guanacaste region of the Nicoya Peninsula is the best place to find long stretches of deserted sands, the perfect spot for you and your partner to disappear for a while. There are several semi-active volcanoes here to explore, in addition to cattle ranches and lakes.

Mount Chirripo
Perched above the sea on the central Pacific coast, Mount Chirripo is the highest peak in the country. The whole area boasts some pretty spectacular views and is a great place to stay in for a few days, just absorbing the environment. A few cozy boutique hotels with panoramic views that cater to honeymooners can be found here.

Caribbean coast
The Caribbean coast is full of rivers, rainforests and banana plantations, and has many remote and secluded areas that are perfect for romantic getaways. You can hop in a riverboat and explore the unique biodiversity of Tortuguero National Park, home to spider monkeys, howler monkeys, capucin monkeys, jaguars, sloths, parrots, caimans and leatherback turtles. The Cahuita National Park, a gorgeous, palm-lined beach with coral reefs and some sunken ships close to shore, is a great place to relax amidst spectacular scenery.

Santa Teresa
Off the beaten path on the southern tip of the Pacific’s Nicoya Peninsula are some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Less developed than other areas and with far fewer crowds, fine accommodation in little fishing villages along the palm-lined shores create the perfect recipe for romance. Here you have a combination of great beaches, tropical rainforest and luxurious accommodation and spas.

Central Pacific Coast
If you’re planning a beach vacation, head to the Central Pacific Coast. It’s a 90-minute drive from San Jose, Costa Rica’s landlocked capital. The best coastal towns include Dominical and Punta Uvita, both of which are known for their relaxing atmosphere, spas and boutique resorts. If too much relaxing makes you restless, head over to Ballena Marine National Park for some whale- and dolphin-watching, or take a horseback ride into the mountains to find hidden waterfalls.
